Illuminance is the amount of light falling on a surface. One lux is one lumen per square metre; one foot-candle is one lumen per square foot, about 10.764 lux. The phot is an older CGS unit equal to 10,000 lux. Lighting guidelines are quoted in both units. Offices typically aim for 300 to 500 lux (about 28 to 46 foot-candles), direct sunlight can exceed 100,000 lux, and a well-lit living room is around 150 lux.
