In ordinary prose the answer is almost always a one-letter word — 'a' or 'I' are the only standalone single letters in English — so the more interesting output is the full list at each short length, which shows how much of your writing is made of function words. That matters when tightening copy: a paragraph where the majority of terms are two and three-letter connectives usually has too many clauses. It is also a quick way to catch stray fragments left behind after an edit, or single-character rows in a pasted data column.
